The EU and Norway formed a Green Alliance to tackle climate change, protect the environment, and accelerate the adoption of clean energy. The alliance is the most comprehensive form of bilateral engagement established under the European Green Deal, which sets a roadmap to make the EU's economy sustainable.
Both parties have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The alliance will prioritise combating climate change, adopting clean energy technologies, decarbonising transportation, promoting sustainable finance, increasing regulatory cooperation, and collaborating on research and innovation.
The alliance reinforces the European Green Deal's language on digital technologies, emphasising the importance of green and digital transitions in achieving these goals, particularly in research and education areas. Both sides prioritise sustainably securing critical raw materials and technologies for the green and digital transitions, acknowledging their role in enabling a circular economy.
In addition, the EU and Norway will promote ambitious climate action globally and support developing countries in their climate and environment policies. The agreement emphasises the importance of the precautionary principle in the Arctic region to keep global temperature rise within the 1.5C limit.
