China plans to roll out digital driving licences by 2022 across the whole country. Chinese media reported spokesperson for China's Ministry of Public Security Li Guozhong told a press conference that a digital driving licence pilot had already been launched in the cities of Tianjin, Chengdu and Suzhou. Over 1.95 people had already been enrolled into the programme.
The digital licences have the same legal effect as paper licences. They can be used for handling traffic violations, road accidents, insurance claims and renting vehicles. Drivers can apply for the digital licence through the official mobile app.
