In the context of the ongoing .org sale controversy, a Cooperative Corporation of .org Registrants was formed in California, to offer an alternative owner of the .org registry. The cooperative's initial board members include, among others, ICANN founding chair Esther Dyson and founding CEO Mike Roberts, Wikimedia Foundation CEO Katherine Maher, and Packet Clearing House Executive Director Bill Woodcock. The group hopes to convince ICANN to block the sale of .org to Ethos and, instead, transfer .org stewardship to the new cooperative corporation, which would work in public interests and return excess funds to the non-profit community.
