US news media CNBC has shared details of Apple's digital ID that is set to be implemented in eight states in the US. Announced in September 2021, Apple's digital ID programme aims to integrate state issued identities such as drivers licences into Apple products such as the iPhone and Apple Watch. This would enable people to identify themselves using their gadgets.
According to CNBC, agreements between Apple and the states give Apple control over the features of the programme, while requiring the states to maintain computer systems for the programme. In addition, states are required to provide personnel to support the programme and proactively offer the new ID to licence holders. Privacy advocates have raised concern that states are unnecessarily ceding control to Apple.
