The main Chinese telecom companies are assessing opportunities to intensify their presence in the countries who are part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region, particularly where Internet penetration rate is low. This seems to be a response to China's 'One Belt, one Road Initiative', which calls for massive investment in and development of trade routes in the region. China Mobile, the largest carrier, mentioned they opened three subsidiaries in the region in 2015, while China Telecom claimed they would open a branch in Myanmar in 2016. China Unicom revealed plans to expand to Myanmar and Thailand.
