Amazon seeks regulatory approval to launch Project Kuiper in India

18 de outubro de 2023 Hi-network.com

As per reports, Amazon is attempting to launch its satellite-based broadband internet services, Project Kuiper, in India. The company is currently seeking approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) to provide broadband services from space in India. In addition, it will also have to apply for a global mobile personal communication by satellite services (GMPCS) license from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to offer satellite-based internet services in the country.

Other attempts at launching satellite internet connectivity in India include OneWeb and Jio Satellite, both of which have obtained a GMPCS license from the government. However, a prominent market player in the LEO satellite internet segment, Starlink, still awaits approval.

If Amazon manages to get the necessary permission, it will allow Project Kuiper, which utilizes a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit, to offer fast and low-latency broadband connectivity across the country.

Why does it matter?

In order to realize its objective, Amazon intends to launch a multitude of satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), establishing connections with a worldwide network of antennas, fiber optics, and ground-based internet access points. This extensive setup is designed to offer swift, low-delay broadband coverage across the globe. Project Kuiper aims not only to grant direct broadband access to consumers but also to furnish backhaul services to telecommunications carriers.

If given the green light by the regulator, Project Kuiper has the potential to narrow the digital divide by ensuring rapid and cost-effective internet accessibility for communities currently lacking online connectivity.
